Our choirs star in brand new Channel 4 comedy series Everyone Else Burns
24 January 2023
A group of singers from two of our choirs are the latest additions to a brand new Channel 4 comedy series which has launched this week.
About Everyone Else Burns
The new show is a coming-of-age comedy about a Mancunian family and the puritanical Christian sect they are devoted to. Will patriarchal David Lewis ever ascend the church ranks and become an Elder? Will dutiful wife Fiona deviate from her own dogmatic moral compass? Will their naïve 17-year-old daughter Rachael be allowed to go to university, and will 12-year-old son Aaron ever fend off his secular bullies? All could lead to damnation.
Simon Bird of The Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner star Simon Bird features alongside a string of co-stars. Our singers can be spotted performing in episode six.
The TV cameo is an exciting moment for our group, with our choirs newly forming in summer of 2021 as lockdown restrictions eased. Since then, both Chorlton Sings and Alty Voices have gone from strength to strength. The choirs have grown in members, performed a range of gigs and even recorded music videos.
A new experience
Everyone Else Burns is our group’s first foray into television. Choir Director Rose de la Font and choir member George Hollywood wrote a bespoke arrangement for the programme. Fourteen singers from the group perform the song, which includes a solo from George.
The recording is also accompanied by our friends Joe Knowles and Matthew Hill, on guitar an cahon, from Manchester band Vala.
Over to you
Chorlton Sings members Michael and Vee who took part in the filming talked about being on the show:
“It was a surreal and exciting experience. Being on a big production like this as a local community choir was quite scary but fun – and we had a blast filming and hanging around on set!” – Michael
“It was such a great opportunity for the choir to be a part of! To see the creative process and be around such a talented bunch was so inspiring.” – Vee
Monique from Alty Voices also commented on the unique experience:
“What an absolutely tremendously exciting experience this was for our choir to experience, and we shone like stars singing beautiful harmonies and feeling the music in unison. We all hugely enjoyed the day and the final recording was thrilling. A day with Alty voices and Chorlton Sings that we shall have engrained in our memories. We are so looking forward to seeing the series on screen. What a privilege.” – Monique
Rose de la Font, Director of both choirs, was also thrilled to be invited to work with the programme.
“It’s been so exciting to be able to bring our choirs to a brand new series and get some local Greater Manchester talent on national TV! We had a great time rehearsing, performing and working with the production teams and we can’t wait for everyone to watch the series when it launches.” – Rose
The choirs plan to celebrate by binge-watching all six episodes together in a local scout hut.
